A Quick Guide to the Many Types of Mental Health Professionals

Do you know the difference between a psychiatrist, and psychologist, and a counselor? And if so, do you also know the difference between an LPC, LMFT, LCSW, PsyD, and all those other letters you might find following the names of therapists in Psychology Today’s directory?

If you do, then our hats are off to you, and you probably don’t need this great video from Kati Morton, LMFT. For the rest of us, Morton runs down the differences between those credentials, both in education and what you can expect as a patient. She doesn’t cover every single flavor of therapist (as that would quite literally take hours), but she goes over the major categories and some of the more common credentials you’re likely to encounter.

Once you know a bit more about what to expect, we also have a guide on how to find a therapist who’s a good fit for your needs. Therapy is the furthest thing from a one-size-fits-all experience, so the more you know about what to expect and what to look for going in, the better your chances are at finding someone who makes you feel heard.
