Don’t Miss This Video on Mental Illness Representation in TV and Games

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice isn’t the first game, or even the first high-budget game, to explore mental health issues with at least a modicum of respect, but in this video, YouTube game analysis channel HeavyEyed argues that it’s a turning point, part of a shift toward creators in both TV and games who are able to take more risks outside the usual studio/network structure.

With shows like “BoJack Horseman,” “Please Like Me” and “You’re The Worst” building followings on portraying complicated characters with complicated issues and Hellblade being marketed on its developers’ efforts to consult with psychologists and people with lived experience of the mental health issues that they’re portraying, it’s an argument with merit. Check out the video above and see what you think.
