Last year’s Self-Care Jam brought us lots of small, delightful games — some about self care, some personally meaningful.
Self-Care Jam 2 is happening from October 28 – November 6th. This year’s self-care jam is even more explicitly about taking care of yourself. Once again, there are no big themes, no rules, and no competition. Just a reminder to do something good for yourself.
2017 is almost over. It’s been quite a stressful time for a lot of us, so let’s take a week to work on something tiny for our own sake. There’s no competition, no risk, and no pressure. You don’t have to do anything big or shiny, just take a moment to get the satisfaction of making something that won’t add undue stress on yourself.
You can make a game, write a poem, knit a sweater, draw a picture, compose a song, or do anything else that you would enjoy. It doesn’t need to be about the state of the world, or something that makes the people that play it feel happy. This is just for you.
If that sounds like just the thing you need, you can join the jam (no pressure!). If you’re used to game jams being high-pressure, competitive situations, we have some tips for taking it easy on yourself while working on your project.
If you want to create a game for Self Care Jam 2 and you’ve never made a game before, remember, start small. A low-pressure, just-for-fun game jam probably isn’t the time to learn Unity from scratch and build your first commercial masterpiece. Free software like Twine can be a great starting point. Other free and low-cost engines can be good for beginners, too.
Now’s a lovely time to make something that makes you happy, and Self Care Jam 2 is here to give you the boost you need to get started.
